Top Dunks: 81-90
November 9th, 2011 by Sam PerkinsSam’s countdown of the top 100 America East dunks of the past season continues, as Air Brenton Airlines takes flight, the America East throws down on the game’s biggest stage, a wide load rattles the backboard and a lay-up line superstar gets his moment to shine.
90. Tommy Brenton (Stony Brook) vs Albany, 2010 AE Tournament, 3/6/2010:Air-Brenton Airlines was cleared for liftoff in the 2010 America East Tournament. Trailing on a 2-on-1 fast break, Benton took a Chris Martin pass, took off from behind the America East logo in the paint, and threw down a two-handed slam over Logan Aronholt (1:13 mark on this video).
89. Marqus Blakely (Vermont) @ Hartford, 1/30/2008: Blakely took off from outside of the paint, and actually outleapt the alley-oop feed. Blakely had to reach back down to pluck the ball away from Hartford defender Joe Zeglinski, before throwing down a two-handed slam (1:37 mark in the video)
88. Germain Mopa-Njila (Vermont) vs Syracuse, 2005 NCAA Tournament, 3/18/05: This dunk is more because of the circumstances than the degree of difficulty of the dunk itself. With just over five minutes remaining in regulation, and the 13-seeded Catamounts clinging to a 43-41 lead over 3-seed Syracuse, Mopa-Njila picked off a bounce pass at the top of the key and was off to the races, throwing down a two-handed double-pump slam. The Catamounts, of course, would go on to a 60-57 overtime win, one of the biggest upsets in NCAA tournament history. Check the 4:10 mark of this video for the dunk.
87. Corey Lowe (BU) vs Albany, 1/16/08: People often forget how good of an athlete Lowe was before all of the miles he put on his tires (and injuries to his legs). Against the Great Danes, Lowe (who stands only 6’1” in his shoes) drove right down the lane, exploded off of two feet, and hammered home a one-handed tomahawk in traffic.
86. Chaz Carr (BU) vs Northeastern, 2/22/04: A huge game at Case Gymnasium against the arch rival Huskies, Carr got the sold out crowd into it early. Carr picked Jose Juan Barea’s pocket, sparking a footrace between two of the league’s fastest (and smallest) players. The 5’10” (and that is likely a bit generous) Carr leapt off of two feet, reached back for a little extra oomph, and threw down a two-handed slam over the future NBAer.
85. Mahamoud Jabbi vs Vermont, 2011 AE Tournament, 3/5/11: Jabbi caught a pass outside of the paint and exploded off the ground, cocking the ball way back behind his head before throwing down a backboard-rattling two-handed slam. Jabbi’s head was literally level with the rim (a not so great video of the dunk can be seen at the 1:01 mark)
83. Jason Siggers (Albany) @ Harvard, 12/12/06:6’4” Siggers drove into a packed lane against the Crimson and elevated in traffic. Harvard 7-footer Brian Cusworth tried to break it up, but wound up getting a two-handed dunk on his head, and assessed a foul for his troubles.
82. Dan Daccarett (BU) vs Harvard, 12/9/03: A walk-on for four years, Daccarett was a lay-up line superstar at BU, throwing down big dunks in pre-game for most of his career. But he made the most of his time in the Terriers 86-42 massacre of the Crimson. “Big Dan,” who at 6’8” and a chiseled 255 lived up to his nickname, leapt off of two feet, steamrolled Crimson forward Matt Stahle (who made the mistake of trying to body him), and threw down a monster two-handed slam that left the backboard rattling long after the play.
81. Matt Sheftic (Vermont) vs Albany, 2003 America East Tournament, 3/9/03: Listed at 6’8” 260, and in actuality weighing in around the 3-bill mark, Sheftic was one of the strongest players to ever set foor in the AE. To say the least, Sheftic was HUGE. In the quarterfinal against Albany, he took a Germain Mopa-Njila bounce pass on the left block and elevated above the fray, cocking the ball all the way back behind his head before throwing down a mammoth two-handed tomahawk. The dunk was so powerful that it momentarily lifted the base of the hoop.
